Global Hearts: The G.E.M. x China Medical Mission

How do you bridge the gap between a Los Angeles-based non-profit and the hearts of millions in China? You partner with a global pop icon, travel to the front lines, and tell a story of redemption and hope. This campaign transformed a standard medical mission into a high-profile international movement.

The Strategy (The "Brain")

During my tenure at Mending Kids International, I was tasked with scaling our fundraising for the annual China Medical Mission. Our PR agency I managed proposed a "white-space" opportunity to partner with G.E.M. (Gloria Tang Tsz-kei), a Chinese pop sensation with over 30 million followers (8 million+ on Instagram alone). My strategy was to move beyond traditional "ask" marketing and create an immersive content journey that allowed her massive fan base to feel personally connected to the orphans receiving life-saving care.

The Execution (The "Grit")

I served as the lead strategist and on-site director, managing an international collaboration that spanned continents.

  • International Production: I flew to China to coordinate a high-stakes photo and film shoot with G.E.M. and her team at our partner orphanage. I worked hand in hand with our Finance Manager, originally from China, to coordinate all translations and communications while writing and directed the fundraising video, ensuring the narrative was both culturally resonant and emotionally compelling.

  • A-List Talent Management: G.E.M. generously supported the cause pro-bono. I managed this high-profile relationship on the ground—attending her concerts to build rapport and ensuring her team had the assets needed to activate her fan base.

  • Multi-Platform Fundraising: I architected a digital strategy that utilized global platforms like WeChat and Classy.org, making it seamless for international donors to contribute.

  • The Gala Integration: I leveraged the raw content gathered in China to theme our Annual Gala in Los Angeles. Attended by celebrities and media, the event used my storytelling to showcase the lives saved, creating a full-circle narrative for our high-net-worth donors.

The Big Win (The Results)

The combination of the celebrity digital campaign and the high-profile Gala created a record-breaking year for the China mission.

  • $145,000+ Raised: The G.E.M. digital campaign raised $45,000+, while the China-themed Gala raised well over $100,000.

  • Global Exposure: Reached millions of potential advocates through G.E.M.’s social channels and international media coverage.

  • Sustained Impact: Provided critical, life-saving surgical care to dozens of orphans through the funds raised during this concentrated effort.
